We are dedicated to bringing out the soul of grassroots culture in the city of bridges and helping build a community interconnected with the elements beneath the surface. Our goal is to promote collective creativity through a fluid intersection of people, places, ideas and vibrations. In doing so, we seek to connect independent arts and culture to the urban development of Pittsburgh and unlock the potential energy through the poetry of people in motion....

Wood Street Galleries, a project of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, presents After Image on Friday, September 12 through October 25, 2003. This group show, curated by Murray Horne, features installation works by artists who employ LED (light-emitting diode) as a primary material. Participating artists include Erwin Redl, Leo Villareal and Jim Campbell. An opening reception, free and open to the public, will be held on Friday, September 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. Austrian-born Erwin Redl will debut FLOW, commissioned by Wood Street Galleries. FLOW is a mesmerizing large-scale installation placed in eight windows (measuring 28' by 6') of the Wood Street "T" station building facing Liberty Avenue. FLOW will be exhibited through March 2005 to coincide with the end of the Carnegie International. A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Jim Campbell has exhibited at the Hosfelt Gallery in San Francisco, as well as Whitney Biennial 2002. David Bonetti of the San Francisco Chronicle has written about Campbell's work: "Jim Campbell is one of the smartest artists using technology in the Bay Area...What distinguishes his work is that he pays as much attention to the visual effects his works create as to the technology that makes them possible. Among works of technologically based art, his are uniquely appealing in an aesthetic sense." Leo Villareal is a graduate from New York University and Yale University and has exhibited work at the Sandra Gering Gallery in New York, Mexico City's Museo de Arte Moderno, and The Armory Show 2001. ""Leo Villareal exploits the mystery that technology can offer,"" writes Curator and Director of Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art Michael Rush. ""Although he is full master of his interactive technologies, his work allows for wonder and imagined universes.

Free | 7pm-10pm @ The Garfield Artworks 4931 Penn Ave [ Garfield ]. Info: 412-951-0622 or
mancusoart@cs.com
or www.garfieldartworks.com
Inspired by her time away from home, Kathleen Lolley’s work depicts characters and stories that are playfully unusual. Two-dimensional figures painted on old parchment appear to be part of a complex story- as if the characters escaped the pages that bound them and froze again in the air of reality. The simple, child-like images clearly translate very mature subjects reminiscent of Eastern European folklore. After a childhood split between Kentucky and Pittsburgh, melding backwater sentiments with urban culture and ideas came naturally when Kathleen moved to the West Coast. She traveled to Los Angeles five years ago to attend CalArts for animation, where she experimented with handcrafted stop motion characters. In addition to working on various commercial animations including Nickelodeon’s Sponge Bob Squarepants, Kathleen has created a handful of short films, which will be projected at the opening reception, The artist ultimately came back to her art- and her roots- and has been showing her work at independent galleries across the U.S. Most recently, Kathleen was very well received in Austin, Texas and at this summer’s San Diego Comic Book Convention. Consequently, she has created an entirely new collection for Pittsburgh. Other achievement of Ms. Lolley’s include: illustrating a children’s book entitled Jackie the Angel, contributing to Kramers Ergot 2002; a graphic comic book collection, participating in Los Angeles’ underground art community Cannibal Flower that features renegade artists in various venues in the LA area, winning second place in the juried Vancouver Effects and Animation Inc Festival and participating in the Hiroshima International Festival in Japan.

$10 Donation Suggested | 8pm-midnight @ Mr. Smalls Funhouse 400 Lincoln Ave [ Millvale ]. Info: 412-243-5025
or www.salvoarts.org
In 2003, a diverse group of creative individuals working in various types of reclaimed, recycled and reused materials united to form SALVO (Salvage Artists Linking Venues & Opportunities), with the goal of creating a forum to link artists with salvage materials and other artists working in this genre. SALVO has worked with GroundZero, Construction Junction and others to start a group and get it moving. The group has been meeting and working towards organizing a Salvage Arts Festival that will take place October 18th and 19th at Construction Junction. The festival will involve a salvage art show, workshops, installation art creation, music etc. The long term goal for SALVO is to create a permanent salvage arts organization with its own facilities. The second day of the festival will be a design charrette devoted to the development of SALVOs future. SALVO is just getting started and we are still looking for volunteers who want to be involved in the festival and the future of the project. Our fall festival is quickly approaching and there are lots of opportunities to get involved. Please come out this Friday and learn more about the project, have a drink, hear some music and support environmentally conscious and culturally progressive salvage art.
