We are dedicated to bringing out the soul of grassroots culture in the city of bridges and helping build a community interconnected with the elements beneath the surface. Our goal is to promote collective creativity through a fluid intersection of people, places, ideas and vibrations. In doing so, we seek to connect independent arts and culture to the urban development of Pittsburgh and unlock the potential energy through the poetry of people in motion....

Thursday, Febuary 12, 2004 - Film: My Architect
$5 | 7:30 pm @ Harris Theater 809 Liberty Avenue [Downtown]. 412-682-4111 www.pghfilmmakers.org Map/directions

Louis Kahn, who in 1974 died bankrupt and alone in New York City's Pennsylvania Station, is considered by many architectural historians to be the most important architect of the second half of the 20th century. He left behind a brilliant legacy of intensely powerful buildings - geometric compositions of brick, concrete and light. Kahn's dramatic death laid bare a complex personal life of secrets and broken promises. In this compelling film Kahn's only son, Nathaniel, sets out on a journey to reconcile his father's life and work. I.M. Pei, Frank Gehry and Philip Johnson speak movingly of Kahn's work (including the Salk Institute, the Exeter Library, the Kimbell Art Museum) and the women and children in his life shed light on this secretive, peripatetic man. (Directed by Nathaniel Kahn; USA; 2003; 118min.)

Thursday, Febuary 12, 2004 - Theatre: Undoing Salk
$22/$18 | 8:00 PM @ Pittsburgh Playhouse 222 Craft Avenue [Oakland]. 412-621-4445 www.ppc.edu/playhouse Map/directions

In the forties and early fifties, families with children dreaded the summer months when polio epidemics would sweep the country. There were mass closings of swimming pools, movie houses, any place kids might congregate. Some towns set up roadblocks to keep outsiders away. In the cities, residents spent the summer hiding in sweltering houses. Thousand died, then tens of thousands; more were crippled for life; hundreds lived trapped in huge iron lungs. Then, when the epidemics were at their worst, there appeared an unlikely savior from Pittsburgh: a bespectacled researcher named Jonas Salk. He became, for a time, the most famous man in the world, and in the popular mind he remains an American saint to this day. But within the scientific community, he became an outcast, ridiculed and passed over for the Nobel Prize and even for membership in the National Academy of Science. This play uncovers the undoing of Salk by a conspiracy of profit-seeking drug companies, an AMA and federal government terrified at the prospect of “socialized medicine,” jealous fellow scientists, and Salk’s own hubris. This drama uncovers the undoing of Salk by a conspiracy of profit-seeking drug companies, jealous fellow scientists and Salk’s own hubris. A must-see world premiere. Written, designed and directed by Robert Benedetti.

Wednesday, Febuary 18, 2004 - Public Lecture By Mattress Factory Artist Margo Sawyer - The Field and Its Knower: Lessons for an Installation Artist from the Far East
$10 / $5 for students / Free for Members of the Mattress Factory | 7:00 PM @ Pittsburgh High School for the Creative and Performing Arts 111 Ninth Street [Downtown]. Map/directions

Artist Margo Sawyer created the new work, Lux Lucis Lumen, for the Mattress Factory's current exhibition New Installations, Artists in Residence (on view through June 27). Sawyer is Head of Sculpture at The University of Texas at Austin. She received her B.A. from the Chelsea School of Art in London, and her M.F.A. in sculpture from Yale University. Sawyer's installations focus on placing viewers within spaces of reflection, meditation and contemplation. She creates large-scale installations inspired by observations of historic and contemporary sites of sacred architecture, many of which she visited while living and studying in Japan, Burma and India. Sawyer is interested in the relationship between space and transcendence, as explored in Buddhism and Hinduism. From her research, Sawyer creates sculptural topographies that map a contemplative terrain that is part architecture and part landscape. Margo Sawyer is currently working on a solo exhibition at the Blaffer Art Gallery at the University of Houston and a collaborative public artwork for the San Antonio Airport that incorporates glass, light and fog. The tenor of all my work is to create contemplative spaces. They are very slow reads; what is going on inside them is not blatantly obvious. The works demand that viewers spend more time with the work and linger to watch what unfolds. The work is as much about a conversation within viewers as it is between the viewer and what they are actually looking at. I suppose the piece has a stellar-like quality, like a mini universe that comes into play and then sort of disappears. I am interested in a revelatory wonder that can take your breath away. A place for visitors to come back to a lot and be. The East is my touchstone; the ancient world is where I get my inspiration. -- Margo Sawyer
