Saturday May 29, 2004 Deadline -  Call for Artists to decorate a Daniel Sadler sculptural form

For a special event A at GalleriE CHIZ
Saturday  June 5, 2004  6-9pm
Co-sponsored by CHIZ and the Society for Contemporary Craft
in Memory of Daniel Sadler to Benefit the Epilepsy Foundation

Artists and celebrities will be contributing their creativity in designing and executing pieces of art employing unused Sadler sculptural forms, donated by the Sadler family.
These artworks will be used for a silent auction, which will be open to the public and continue through June 19th.  A $10.00 entrance charge for the kick-off party will be donated to the Epilepsy Foundation.

Daniel Sadler died in a car accident on February 25th.  He had apparently experienced an epileptic seizure while driving.  His art was sold throughout the United States, and he had become a well-known local artist, having chosen Pittsburgh as his home.  He moved here from Los Angeles in October, 2002.  His work can be found in many formidable collections nationwide.  We, at GalleriE CHIZ and the Society for Contemporary Craft, are proud to have worked with him and to have sold his work here in Pittsburgh, and we support the Epilepsy Foundation in his honor.  The kick-off party on June 5th will feature live music by The Deliberate Strangers and catering by Whole Foods Market.

 ***
·     As an artist, you may choose one of Daniel Sadler’s metal frames to decorate in any way you please (some examples of his pieces are above). They may be illuminated or not.  We do ask that the piece be VALUED at $300.00 or less, although they may sell for more than that in the auction.
·     Artists will receive 1/3 of the actual selling price, not of the estimated value (i.e. you may receive $10.00 or $100.00, or whatever, depending on the bidding).  If the piece   is not sold by the end of the auction period (June 19th) it is yours to keep.
·     The pieces may be picked up at CHIZ any time starting now.  The sooner you come in, the larger the selection will be.
·      If you have any questions you can call Ellen Chisdes Neuberg or Laura Coleman at GalleriE CHIZ, 412-441-6005 or e-mail us at galleriechiz@earthlink.net <mailto:galleriechiz@earthlink.net>  .
·     CHIZ is located at 5831 Ellsworth Avenue in Shadyside.  When you pick up your form, we will need for you to sign a brief agreement so that we are assured that you will be committed to complete and return the piece of art to the gallery.
·     The completed piece must be delivered to GalleriE CHIZ between Tuesday, May 25th and Saturday, May 29th.  Our hours are Tuesday-Friday 11-6, Saturday 11-5.  No pieces will be accepted after the 29th.
·     Upon delivery of your completed sculpture, you will be presented with one admission ticket to the kick-off party on June 5th.  This enables you, as a donator of art, to attend without paying the $10.00 cost of admission.

This will be an exciting event for all of us.  We have been getting an incredibly enthusiastic response, both from artists and others in the community.  We know the pieces we receive will be fabulous! Daniel had become quite a creative force here.  We are all saddened by his untimely death and are proud to honor him in this way.  Thank you.

May 14 deadline – call for artists for Stiff Competition: When Politics Makes for Strange Bed Fellows

Planned Parenthood Western Pennsylvania’s Action Fund (PPWPAF) announced its sixth annual fundraiser—Stiff Competition: When Politics Makes For Strange Bedfellows—and issued a call for artists to submit works of art based on the theme. The only requirement for submission is creative interpretation of the theme. More information can be found online at http://www.stiffcompetition.org. Artwork can be submitted directly to Planned Parenthood offices at 209 Ninth Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222, and there is no entry fee. Deadline for entries is Friday, May 14, 2004.

The art will be featured in an exhibition at The Andy Warhol Museum on June 2, 2004, and auctioned off to raise funds and awareness for PPWPAF. A panel of judges, including Mattress Factory Director Barbara Luderowski, Three Rivers Arts Festival Director Elizabeth Reiss, Concept Art Gallery owner Sam Berkovitz, Mendelson Gallery owner Steven Mendelson and Pittsburgh Public Theater Artistic Director Ted Pappas, will select one design that will be reproduced into actual condom packages. Honorary co-chairs for this year’s event are Pennsylvania State Treasurer Barbara Hafer and Izzazu International Salon owner Emilio Cornacchione,

Additional information about the event, the judges and previous winners can be found at www.StiffCompetition.org <http://www.stiffcompetition.org/> <http://www.stiffcompetition.org/> . All proceeds from the competition and gala benefit PPWPAF, an independent, not-for-profit organization formed as the political arm of Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania. Established in 1992, PPWPAF engages in educational and electoral activity including issue education, grassroots organizing, public opinion research, lobbying, and independent expenditure campaigns.

Thursday, April 22, 2004 - Press Play Video Series Announces VISION OF EXCESS Screening

Attack Theater, 4805 Penn Avenue, Garfield. $5/$3 students.

Press Play Video Series is pleased to announce its April screening: VISIONS OF EXCESS.  What extremes will videomakers go to?  What
happens when they splurge, pig out, tell all, freak out or break it down?  In this, Press Play’s 6th screening, videomakers take it to
the limit, and we’ve got it all on tape.

In Stoney Does Houston, by Bob Hercules, street performer Stoney Burke leads us on an irreverent tour of the 1992 Republican National
Convention, infiltrating the crowds to cozy up to Rush Limbaugh, Alfonse D’Amato, Oliver North, Bruce Willis and many more, and ask
tough questions that catch the Republican insiders off guard. Everything about David Allen Burns’s Asswax is excessive, even the title.  Burns documents an intimate procedure with a perverse, literally hair-raising zeal.

The Tower, by Quirine Racke and Helena Muskens, visits three generations of Flatze family as they talk about wealth, desire, ‘60s counterculture, infidelity and idleness.  Fact and fantasy intertwine as the Flatzes tell conflicting stories, each with an eerie poise, as if they had rehearsed their monologues many times.  At once bleak and
decadent, The Tower’s most startling revelation is our own capacity for self-absorption.

Ellen Lake investigates collection obsessions in Rubber Band Ball and Ann’s Hoard.  A San Francisco corner store houses a 2000-pound ball
of rubber bands, and a self-described hoarder talks about her world of compulsive collecting.

Other videos include an eye-opening short by Press Play favorite Jennifer Norton, the impenetrable sounds and crowds in Jubal Brown’s
Riot ‘98, and the swinging good times of Phillip B. Roth’s Hammer of Hope.

Press Play is a video series dedicated to bringing national and international video work by emerging and established artists to
Pittsburgh.  Press Play is made possible by a grant from the Sprout Fund and through the sponsorship of Pulp Magazine.

Dear Friends and Artists,

As I prepare for this final show in Pittsburgh, and a move to San Francisco, I realize a few things need to be said. To all of you who have affected and supported my career as an artist and as a person, thank you. I feel that it is necessary to tell all of you how much Pittsburgh has meant to me as a city and more importantly those of you who make it come alive. I do not move from Pittsburgh leaving it behind, no in fact it's imperative that I take it along with me. To bridge the two cities and bring more life, joy and art to both is the ultimate goal. And the ultimate achievement.

Five years ago I had my first one man show at Valhalla where I first picked up a City Paper and saw the "Call For Artists." I was flooded with excitement at the thought of people in this city looking for people like me. I decided to move on a Wednesday and came to the city that Friday. With help from Christy Taylor and other leaders like herself, I became integrated with the arts community established in Pittsburgh. Over the next few months I discovered a beautiful "play ground" where every one was celebrated and art was celebrated. It was the first place that allowed me to truly be myself and express myself through my art work.

I must give personal thanks to:

Christiana D. Leech with Sun Crumbs etc. etc., for her determination and no failure attitude. Christiana taught me that as one door closes, another opens and ALL things that you do are a success...because you did them.

Jeffrey Dorsey at Friendship Development and Penn Avenue Arts Initiative., for showing me the value that a community can hold. That you can shape and change the community through your art and that the community can shape and change your art. They are a yin and yang.

Mark Whitehead with Dark Night Cabaret, who month after month brings artists of every genre together, and teaches us that we're all in this thing together.

And Scottie Bellinger who in the first few months taught me how important it is to cut through the "Social B.S." and truly be myself, No Matter What!

Thanks for always being by my side.

These are just a few thank you's that I need to say. It's so important to me to see all of you at the reception so I can personally thank you for your support.

 Love You Pittsburgh,

~T.K. Mundok

PS Keep in Touch

Please Send this on to your Friends and Artists because we are all connected.

Friday April 30 – The Penn Avenue Arts Initiative Needs Strong Volunteers

The PAAI is seeking a few able bodied volunteers to help unload and set up a very heavy public art work (made from steel and concrete) on Penn Ave. Volunteers should expect to spend a better part of the day on this. Interested volunteers should email Anne Chen anne@edge-studio.com or Jeffrey Dorsey jeffrey@friendship-pgh.org

 _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

about the a list

The PAAI a list was created for the purposes of promoting the Penn Avenue Corridor, changing the perception of its adjacent neighborhoods to a positive one, make you aware of its revitalization opportunity and accomplishments, and to help grow the creative community here on Penn Avenue. The PAAI reserves the right to promote whatever it sees as a healthy connection towards meeting this goal. Priority for editing and posting the a-list is always reserved for the promotion of Penn Avenue Corridor artists, people and groups who partner with us, and friends who do things for us in return. If you sent us something and didn’t see it included in our a-list it is either because we didn’t receive it, received it late, it was just way too long to read and edit, or because it was not news in some way shape or form related to the Penn Avenue Corridor. If we miss a week it’s because we are too busy serving the customers mentioned above to achieve lasting change on Penn Avenue to tell you about it that week. So please be patient. And if you really want to be on our a-list, then consider moving to our community and get involved. Help us continue doing great work and we will be happy to promote you with a smile! Otherwise there are numerous other weekly email lists you can be part of. Don’t get us wrong our intent is in no way to create a closed community, a club, or an “in-crowd.” In fact the Penn Avenue Arts Initiative was created to do the opposite – bring together all our neighbors and build on the diversity of the corridor.  We also want to do you a service by not replicating information you get on others lists, so that you don’t get tired or frustrated of reading the same stuff over and over and stop reading us all together. Our hope is that you find the a-list a service and in fact help us promote our little special arts related niche in Pittsburgh. So that when you think of Penn Avenue and the arts you will choose the a list to get the latest news.

To have information that is arts related and relates to the Penn Avenue corridor, please email it to pennarts@friendship-pgh.org by Tuesday - 9AM of the week you would like to see it posted. Please include in this order – the Date, Event Title, Event Location, Contact Info, and Brief Description of Event.
