Artists will be compensated. Deadline for proposals is May 15, 2004. Complete details are listed at www.unionproject.org/artists.htm .

New Sign Installed!

The new Union Project sign was installed over the weekend. Funding for the sign was generously provided by Mellon Financial Corporation Foundation. The sign was designed by Edge Studios of Pittsburgh and fabricated by Jeremy Groznik, a Highland Park resident. We’d also like to thank Pittsburgh Job Corps volunteers for their assistance in excavation and construction of the foundation for the sign.

Construction Junction Hosts April 24 Earth Day Celebration

On Saturday, April 24, Construction will kick off a yearlong effort to put the region on its biggest weight loss plan ever.  The goal:  to “lose” 1,000 tons of building materials by Earth Day 2005.

Every year, more than 25,000 tons of useable building materials are landfilled in Allegheny County.  That’s enough to fill PNC Park four times.   During the next year, CJ is concentrating on keeping just a fraction of that amount out of landfills by introducing the ‘Construction Junction Landfill Reduction’ campaign. The Earth Day festivities taking place on Saturday, April 24, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Construction Junction will include:

Summer and Fall Stained Glass Classes

Students will gain a start-to-finish knowledge of the work necessary to disassemble, repair and reassemble historic 100-year old stained glass church windows from the former Union Baptist Church. The restored windows will be reinstalled into the church building. Students will learn valuable skills while greatly helping the Union Project accomplish its charitable goals – the window restoration alone was estimated to cost up to $900,000 – and this method allows the restoration to be self-sustaining. Sign up to be a part of this innovative and wonderful class!
