Friday, April 30, 2004 - Volunteers to Move Public Art to Penn Ave
On Friday, April 30, 2004, artists, architects, and neighbors will move
a large sculpture from the Carnegie Museum to its new home on Penn Avenue as
part of the Penn Avenue Arts Initiative (PAAI) continual effort to transform
the Penn Avenue Corridor in Garfield and Friendship, in Pittsburgh’s East
End.
The artwork was designed by Chicago-based Gar ofalo Architects and was shown
at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art and most recently the Carnegie
Museum here in Pittsburgh. It’s called APSS which stands for Animated
Public Spatial System Project and consists of prefabricated components of
concrete, steel, and bright yellow mesh which were designed to be assembled
in a variety of ways to suggest public lounging. The vibrant color and
lively form of the piece is anticipated to visually supplement the
neighborhood and arts community along the avenue.
On Friday the disassembled piece will be transported by truck to Penn Avenue
and unloaded in multiple sites by a group of volunteers involved with the
Penn Avenue Arts Initiative (PAAI). Over the next few weeks, the pieces
will be reassembled and will 'grow' in parts along the avenue, In most of
the planned locations, the art will occupy currently vacant and unused sites
while development is pursued and before construction on those sites gets
underway.
Having been identified for years by “The Bride Mural”, designed and created
by the late Judy Penzer and Jill Watson, the Penn Avenue Corridor is
becoming a more visibly unique place. The PAAI has supported local artists
in the creation of public art including “The Gateway” created by
Horizons(2001) located at 5149 and 5150 Penn Avenue and “Today’s Heroic
Paragon”, designed and created by Kevinn Fung (2003) located at 4908 Penn
Avenue. This kind of activity is congruent with the PAAI’s mission to
support artists, arts organizations, and arts-related businesses in
purchasing, renovating, and living and working in former blighted buildings
along Penn Avenue.
“This is another example of the growing community of artists here working
together to make something happen for Penn Avenue. It’s exciting to see this
grass roots initiative continue to grow and develop by the community of
artists who have moved here. The work itself will act as a lead into our
bigger discussion of how a community can use art to mark an entire
commercial district.”
In 2004-2006 the PAAI plans to investigate new and unique ways to mark the
burgeoning arts district along the Garfield Business District. For more
information on the Penn Avenue Arts Initiative and Public Art that can be
found there, go to www.pennavanuearts.org <http://www.pennavanuearts.org/> .

about the a list
The PAAI a list was created for the purposes of promoting the Penn Avenue
Corridor, changing the perception of its adjacent neighborhoods to a
positive one, make you aware of its revitalization opportunity and
accomplishments, and to help grow the creative community here on Penn
Avenue. The PAAI reserves the right to promote whatever it sees as a healthy
connection towards meeting this goal. Priority for editing and posting the
a-list is always reserved for the promotion of Penn Avenue Corridor artists,
people and groups who partner with us, and friends who do things for us in
return. If you sent us something and didn’t see it included in our a-list it
is either because we didn’t receive it, received it late, it was just way
too long to read and edit, or because it was not news in some way shape or
form related to the Penn Avenue Corridor. If we miss a week it’s because we
are too busy serving the customers mentioned above to achieve lasting change
on Penn Avenue to tell you about it that week. So please be patient. And if
you really want to be on our a-list, then consider moving to our community
and get involved. Help us continue doing great work and we will be happy to
promote you with a smile! Otherwise there are numerous other weekly email
lists you can be part of. Don’t get us wrong our intent is in no way to
create a closed community, a club, or an “in-crowd.” In fact the Penn Avenue
Arts Initiative was created to do the opposite – bring together all our
neighbors and build on the diversity of the corridor. We also want to do
you a service by not replicating information you get on others lists, so
that you don’t get tired or frustrated of reading the same stuff over and
over and stop reading us all together. Our hope is that you find the a-list
a service and in fact help us promote our little special arts related niche
in Pittsburgh. So that when you think of Penn Avenue and the arts you will
choose the a list to get the latest news.
To have information that is arts related and relates to the Penn Avenue
corridor, please email it to pennarts@friendship-pgh.org by Tuesday - 9AM of
the week you would like to see it posted. Please include in this order – the
Date, Event Title, Event Location, Contact Info, and Brief Description of
Event.
