Student of classic-soul icons Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, an admirer of pioneers Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, and Prince, and a fanatic of songsters Sting and Joni Mitchell. K'Alyn's approach to song, is to captivate the heart and mind. The Washington, DC-born singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer, released his first solo cd, Coco in 1999 to critical acclaim. This record explores K'Alyn's folkish- soul roots and features the extraordinary talents of producer, Sean "the Rick" Rickman who played drums, bass, guitar and sang background vocals, creating a classic record. After the release of Coco, K'Alyn began grinding on the DC music scene, developing alliances with other area artists, W. Ellington Felton and Raheem DeVaughn, through countless live performances, while establishing a tremendous loyal fan-base. This fan-base was not limited to the DC area, reaching people in nearly every continent of the world through his self-created website, Kalynmusic.com. It was during this time that K'Alyn began assembling the influences and experiences that would later define his unique sound, style and approach to music in the projects to come. The Coco record caught the attention of grammy-nominated artist Meshell Ndegeocello who invited him to open for her at the 9:30 club in DC. She later asked him to sing background vocals with her on tours to follow and he has been a member of her band ever since. Having now performed all over the United States, Japan and Europe, K'Alyn began work on his second release, The Beauty of… which showcases the talents of Federico Gonzalez Peña on keyboards, Funky Chuck Evansand David Dyson on bass guitar and features guest vocal appearances by W. Ellington Felton and Raheem DeVaughn. The Beauty of… is K'Alyn's first glimpse at playing the role of producer. The recording of the record proved to be more significantly, a learning experience of sound, textures and mastery of the recording process. Months after the release of The Beauty of…, he recorded his self-produced, third cd tentatively titled, Verse 1, Chapter III, in about two weeks, performing almost every note himself. This record shows his growth as a songwriter and the expansion of the K'Alyn sound. Merging electronic sounds with acoustic guitars, sparse harmonies, and R & B roots, Verse 1, Chapter III, may prove to be the breakthrough record. When not touring with Meshell, K'Alyn has been producing tracks for his own side projects to come and collaborating with W. Ellington Felton, Raheem Devaughn (Jive Records), and Ayanna Gregory. Two such collaborations have lead to major record releases with W. Ellington Felton and K'Alyn's "Beautifully Absurd" appearing on Prince Paul's2003 release Politics of the Business, and K'Alyn's guitar work which appears on Raheem Devaughn's song "Believe" on the upcoming Jive release, The Love Experience. "Expanding my territory," is what K'Alyn prays for in the future of his musical journey "staying honest and true to my own musical integrity…never negating the progress that the forefathers died for."
