First I would like to thank the Pittsburgh-Metro economy for not charging $9 for
a 10oz Rum + Coke. At the Talib Kweli show at World, I paid $3 for a
“Picnic-Size-Cup” of Rum + Coke. I had to get that out my system. So NYC was
cool. I was able to check out Nathan Peck and Soul Dean rock at Pianos. Even
in a city of 7 million folks I still found myself running into people I
know…small world. I spent most of the time scouting talent and venues… I had
better luck with the venues. Too much hype can be the cause of failure [i.e.
Lazaru! s and Lord + Taylor’s]. Although I did pick up some new promoting
techniques. There were 2 important factors that remained consistent in all the
places I went: People (you can do a lot with few million folks) and liquor.
Liquor Licenses seem to be in abundant in the Big Apple. Government Leaders in
PA need to realize that Liquor Laws have a direct effect on attracting and
retaining youth (I’m not saying that’s the only factor, but it is important).
How? Sales from Liquor allow promoters and venue owners to pay Musicians and
Artists $$$$$$. When a musician can pay their bills from playing gigs, the
chances of them wanting ! to continue to provided that service increases. The
more musicians and performers play the more events there are. And the more
events happening, the more options there are for people, especially young people
with degrees. And so on a so forth. Okay I just lost my train of Thought….
