LATE-NIGHT MOVIES RETURN TO THE OAKS THEATER AS
"MOONLIT MATINEES 2004" SUMMER FESTIVAL

Oakmont, PA, May 29, 2004 -

Late-night movies return to The Oaks Theater beginning Memorial Day weekend, with the kick-off of Pittsburgh's only summer-long film festival, "Moonlit Matinees 2004," an exciting showcase of 16 features representing an extensive array of cult classics, popular audience requests, current movie tie-ins, and some exclusive new fare!  Screening on Saturday nights at Midnight and Sundays at 10:00pm, the twilight lineup features frequent prize giveaways, concession tie-ins, and regular "interactive" discount offers.  Highlights include three Pittsburgh theatrical premieres, several restored or extended revival prints, and an official "Moonlit Matinees 2004" t-shirt, featuring exclusive artwork by illustrator/cartoonist Mark Zingarelli (www.houseofzing.com).  Also scheduled to appear are special festival guests, including actor Anthony Rapp ("Adventures in Babysitting"), Emmy award-winning writer-director James Ronald Whitney ("Games People Play: New York"), Oscar-nominated filmmaker Bill Plympton ("Hair High"), and "Wet Hot American Summer" creators David Wain and Michael Showalter.  Individual tickets are $4.00 per show; "Hair High" sneak preview tickets are $6.00.  Age restrictions on admission will be enforced as necessary.

The festival schedule, spanning 30 summer nights, is as follows:

May 29 only:
"The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra" (2004)
-  "Lost Skeleton in the Popcorn" Contest - Find the "Lost Skeleton" in your popcorn and take home a deluxe chemistry set - two lucky winners! (Remember: buy a larger-sized popcorn to increase your odds.)  A sharp, funny and meticulously authentic throwback to the zany low-budget science fiction epics of the 1950s and 60s, this affectionate tongue-in-cheek homage combines part Ed Wood and part Mystery Science Theater 3000 for a thrilling saga of alien invasion and mutants run amuck!  Preceded by the animated short film "Skeleton Frolic."  (All Ages!)

May 30 only:
"Adventures in Babysitting" (1987)
- Introduction and post-screening Q&A with star Anthony Rapp ("Daryl Coopersmith")!  2-FOR-1 admission with City Theatre "Gompers" ticket stub!  A round-trip drive into "The City" becomes one wild night of twists and turns for a trio of suburban kids and their teenage babysitter, who step outside their familiar element to find real life danger, urban drama, and comic book encounters so outrageous that "home sweet home" will never taste sweeter - if only they get there before Mom and Dad!  (All Ages!)

June 5 & 6:
"Pink Flamingos" (1972)
- "Filthiest Person Alive" drawing - One lucky ticket holder at each show wins a gift package of deodorant!  This 25th Anniversary Extended Version of the infamous "exercise in poor taste" features several sick outtakes and the original theatrical trailer documenting candid reactions from Greenwich Village moviegoers!  Legendary actress Divine stars as Babs Johnson, a trailer park princess whose "Filthiest Person Alive" title is threatened when a despicable couple at an illegal drug-and-adoption agency claim themselves to be the deserved champions of all that is foul.  (18+)

June 12 & 13:
"Games People Play - New York" (2004)
- Pittsburgh Premiere: Q&A with director James Ronald Whitney after each show!  Just when you thought that reality shows had no more boundaries, here comes "Games People Play," the truly uninhibited reality game wherein contestants perform risqué public stunts and offer up scintillating confessionals all in the name of "Fame" and "Fortune."   In this shocking, take-no-prisoners rat race, contestants bare all - greed, guts, skin, soul, and some truly bad behavior - but is all of it really for real?  Bonus Monday Night Discussion Q&A screening on June 14 at 7:30  (18+)

June 19 & 20:
"Seven Samurai" (1954)
- Father's Day Weekend: Fathers admitted FREE with child's ticket purchase!  A desperate village hires seven samurai to protect it from marauders in this crown jewel of Japanese cinema, featuring legendary star Toshiro Mifune.  Seamlessly weaving philosophy and entertainment, delicate human emotions and relentless action, Akira Kurosawa's inspired epic is a triumph of art, and an unforgettable three-hour ride.  50th Anniversary screening - gorgeously restored black-and-white print!

June 26 & 27:
"Evil Dead 2" (1987)
- "Who the heck is Bruce Campbell?!" drawing - One lucky ticket holder at each show takes home a copy of his biography, "If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a 'B' Movie Actor."  In the first feature film sequel helmed by "Spider-Man 2" director Sam Raimi, teen visitors to a cottage in the Michigan woods discover a rare copy of "The Book of the Dead," and accidentally invoke evil spirits.  Cult icon Bruce Campbell ("Bubba Ho-Tep") stars as the brawny wiseguy hero in this gory horror-comedy-sequel-remake classic.

July 3 & 4:
"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (1975)
- "Knights who say 'Ni!'" drawing - One lucky ticket holder at each show wins a shrubbery!  British comedy at its finest, Monty Python's take on the myth of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table is a fine exercise in poetic license, complete with pantomime horses, half-dead plague victims, a killer rabbit, and various other irreverent liberties taken with medieval tradition.  This 25th Anniversary Extended Version features a whopping 24 seconds of bonus footage!  (All Ages!)

July 10 & 11:
"Network" (1976)
- "Mad Prophet of the Airwaves" drawing - One lucky ticket holder at each show receives a year-long subscription to TV Guide!  When a failing television network implements staff restructuring to boost its primetime ratings, one veteran news anchor suffers complete on-air meltdown with the promise of his own televised suicide, and the numbers go through the roof.  Soon executive decision-making takes a decidedly exploitive turn (complete with reality programming of a fashionable terrorist movement), and this brilliant satire's profound suggestion carries even more relevance today.  Shout it out: "I'M MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!"  (All Ages!)

July 17 & 18:
"Run Lola Run" (1998)
- Redheads admitted 2-FOR-1!  With its pulsating soundtrack, unstopping momentum, and enthralling sequence of repeated events, "Run Lola Run" is an innovative thriller that tries its hand thrice for a happy ending, in the process exploring the significance of commonplace occurrences and the impact every decision has on determining the outcome of one's life.  Lola and Manni have 20 minutes to recover an essential loot before some dangerous men will determine their fate - so it's up to chance, luck, and good old fashioned adrenaline for fiery red-headed, swift-on-her-feet Lola (a pre-Hollywood, pre-Matt Damon, pre-"Bourne Supremacy" Franka Potente) to save the day - and save their necks!

July 24 & 25:
"The Manchurian Candidate" (1962)
- "Queen of Diamonds" giveaway - The first 52 moviegoers at each show receive a deck of solitaire cards!  With expert direction from John Frankenheimer and an all-star cast featuring Frank Sinatra, Janet Leigh, Laurence Harvey and Angela Lansbury, this masterful Cold War conspiracy thriller would seem an unlikely candidate for a contemporary remake, but such an occasion is still a welcome excuse to revisit the classic!  A group of Korean War veterans find themselves disturbed by a similar reoccurring nightmare in which the details of a possible brainwashing/assassination plot are blurrily revealed.  (All Ages!)

Jul 31 & Aug. 1:
"Tron" (1982)
- "Tron" drawing - One lucky ticket holder at each show wins an authentic collectible "Tron" action figure!  New 35mm Print!  Nominated for two Academy Awards, "Tron" is something of an oddball studio release from Disney, a cyberpunk classic that depicts the foreboding world inside a computer, featuring freshly innovative CGI effects and shot in Super Panavision 70mm.  In what some regard as a Christian allegory, a hacker finds himself trapped inside the computer program he helped create, wherein he must overcome an evil controller who threatens stability in the virtual universe.  (All Ages!)

Aug. 7 & 8:
"The Warriors" (1979)
- "Can You Dig It?" drawing - One lucky ticket holder at each show walks off with an official "Warriors" t-shirt!  25th Anniversary Presentation - New 35mm Print!  These are the Armies of The Night.  They are 100,000 strong.  They outnumber the cops five-to-one.  They could run New York City.  Tonight, they are all out to get The Warriors.  When the death of the city's prime underground leader is wrongfully pinned on The Warriors, their impossible feat is to escape across town, with an outcome relying on whether the gang can establish its innocence, and return to its home turf alive!

Aug. 14 & 15:
"Woodstock" (1970)
- $1.00 OFF admission with canned food donation.  Celebrate the 35th Anniversary of "3 Days of Peace & Music" with the Oscar-winning documentary of the legendary outdoor music festival.  This 1994 uncut version includes concert performances by Janis Joplin, The Who, and many others, as well as a complete, unedited rock rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" by Jimi Hendrix!  Monday Night Discussion screening August 16 at 7:30

Aug. 21 & 22:
"A Clockwork Orange" (1971)
- "Principle Interests" drawing - One lucky ticket holder at each show wins two tickets to hear the Pittsburgh Symphony perform Beethoven!  Returning annually, by popular request, this Stanley Kubrick cult favorite is a science fiction nightmare about an experimental prison reformation gone wrong, starring Malcolm McDowell as the reconditioned former criminal who is numbed to his old ultra-violent urges, but also finds himself helplessly incapable of self-defense and repelled by his fondness for Beethoven as two unforeseen side effects!  Original tagline: Being the adventures of a young man whose principle interests are rape, ultra-violence and Beethoven.  (18+)

Aug. 28 & 29:
"Wet Hot American Summer" (2001)
- Pittsburgh Theatrical Premiere: Q&A with star Michael Showalter* ("Coop") and director David Wain* after each show!  Conceived by Michael Showalter and David Wain, of New York's popular "Stella" troupe and MTV's cult sketch comedy group "The State," "Wet Hot American Summer" simultaneously embraces, parodies and subverts the decades-old summer camp genre, while putting forth a wholly new comic sensibility.  Set on the last day of camp, in the hot summer of 1981, Janeane Garofalo, Molly Shannon, Paul Rudd, and David Hyde Pierce star among a group of counselors who are each trying to complete their unfinished business before the day ends - the entire summer of pent-up sexual frustrations, unresolved post-traumatic stress, pending separations and (of course) the talent show, all weighing heavily on the minds (and groins) of counselors and campers alike!

Sept. 4 & 5:
"Hair High" (2004)
-SNEAK PREVIEW TICKETS $6.00. Pittsburgh Theatrical Premiere: Q&A with director Bill Plympton* after each show!  Oscar-nominated animator and film director Bill Plympton returns to The Oaks Theater to present a sneak preview of his latest, hilarious animated feature concoction, a "gothic comedy" take-off on the 1950s teen horror genre, replete with bouffant hairdos and avenging teenage skeleton zombies, and featuring his first all-star vocal cast, starring Dermot Mulroney, David Carradine, Martha Plimpton, Don Hertzfeldt, Matt Groening, and "Wet Hot American Summer" star Michael Showalter!
