Scores of Janitors will hold a “Die-In For Healthcare” near the Centre City Tower tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. in the latest of an escalating series of actions to regain the jobs and healthcare of the nine janitors who were forced out of the building during the holidays. The Action Is Next Step In Escalating Series Of Actions Aimed At Regaining Jobs and Healthcare For Centre City Tower Janitors. Thursday’s Die-In follows the start of a hunger strike in front of the building last Monday, a press conference by tenants and yesterday’s unfurling of 20 banners around the county all with the goal of regaining the jobs of the janitors. The Justice For Janitors Campaign is committed to fighting until the Centre City Janitors are reinstated and janitors across the county have decent wages, benefits and protections on the job.

SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE: Heroes of the New Weird American free-folk movement. ANTENNACLE: Textured noise ensemble featuring members of Man Is The Bastard and Creation is Crucifixion with Kevin Finn, and Kasunic Bros AKA Slices Six Organs of Admittance: Perhaps inspired by the east-meets-west solo guitar musings of John Fahey or Robbie Basho, former Plague Lounge guitarist Ben Chasny formed Six Organs of Admittance in 1998 in northern California. Six Organs' self-titled, self-released debut was released that year, followed by various compilation tracks and obscurities. In 2000, Six Organs released the Manifestation EP on Ba Da Bing! records, a one-sided clear vinyl-only release consisting of one extended piece, and featuring female vocals and varied percussion accompanying the centerpiece of Chasny's guitar. Also in 2000, Dust and Chimes was released, first as a limited edition by Pavilion, and then in an expanded run by Holy Mountain. The second full-length from Six Organs, it featured raga-like guitar work surrounded by bells, chimes (as the name implies), drones, and Chasny's multi-tracked, chant-style vocals. ~All Music Guide Antennacle: Antenna Builder (aka Antennacle) is a shadow of the symbols and signs that populate the air we breathe. We inhale the body of the signals. The signals that occupy this space are a product of capital and take the form of the medias we consume and the advertisements we hear. As a shadow, Antenna Builder uses the signals in the air as our technology and as our tool. In each intervention performed by Antenna Builder, a new set of individuals create sound work with a central character transforming FM radio signal transmittance through gesture and location. The FM Theremin Transmitter is a sound interface device invented by Antenna Builder. Each sound creation is partially dependent on the location of the construction and reception for this reason. Created sounds are transmitted and mixed with existing signals in the air of the space. The interference between the sounds already present and the pirated sounds created by the members of Antenna Builder mix and distort to become one voice. We must build to destroy.

The University of Pittsburgh's FESTIVAL OF INDIAN FILMS will use the current familiarity of "Bollywood" to bring together practitioners, scholars, students, and others interested in Indian cinema over a four-week period of film screenings and discussion. The festival demonstrates the range of Indian filmmaking, including "art" and "commercial" cinema, documentary and feature films, and mainstream Hindi and regional Tamil cinema. Given the geo-political importance of South Asia, this event will encourage discussion on the role of popular culture in shaping contemporary global identities. After almost 40 years, this riveting re-release has lost nothing. Shot on location cinema verite style, and starring actual Algerian National Liberation Front rebels, this remains one of the most gut-wrenching war films of all time. Struggling to rid their country of French colonialism, the last rebel standing in Casbah, along with his band of terrorists, paints the streets red with the blood of their enemies. Soon the entire Algerian population is involved. Children shoot soldiers at point blank range; women (disguised as chic Europeans) plant bombs in cafes. A highly-decorated French officer is called in to quash the uprising, but Algiers is on fire and the battle has just begun. Initially banned by the French government, it quickly won wide international acclaim, including an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film.

Join us for an evening with Robert M. Young and see Alambrista, an intense, expressionistic story of a young Mexican who illegally crosses the U.S. border. This realistic portrait, that blurs the line between documentary and fiction, won first prize at the San Sebastian International Film Festival and the Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1978. A discussion with the filmmaker will follow the screening. Robert Young has explored a variety of genres, from nature films and ethnographic studies to television documentaries and independent features. He has been honored at the Sundance Film Festival and awarded also with an Emmy, a Peabody, and two George Polk Prizes for "Heroism in Journalism." Robert Young is admired not only for his work as an independent filmmaker, but also for the underlying integrity and principles he embodies.

Shakespeare’s Hamlet will be presented by Shakespeare-in-the-Schools at the University of Pittsburgh, Monday April 12, 2004 at 7:00 pm in the Studio Theatre, basement of the Cathedral of Learning. This 50-minute production takes a unique departure from what traditionally is regarded as one of Shakespeare's most masterful tragedies and his longest play. Shakespeare-in-the-Schools (SITS) takes a fresh look at the Bard’s classic text in an innovative adaptation featuring just three actors. After being experienced by more than 5,000 students, Shakespeare-in-the-School’s Hamlet is back home for one public performance. The University of Pittsburgh's FESTIVAL OF INDIAN FILMS will use the current familiarity of "Bollywood" to bring together practitioners, scholars, students, and others interested in Indian cinema over a four-week period of film screenings and discussion. The festival demonstrates the range of Indian filmmaking, including "art" and "commercial" cinema, documentary and feature films, and mainstream Hindi and regional Tamil cinema. Given the geo-political importance of South Asia, this event will encourage discussion on the role of popular culture in shaping contemporary global identities. Entitled "Entertainment and Anxiety," the festival showcases films that represent both the entertainment value of Indian cinema and its responses to current national concerns. Brian Dean Richmond, a local filmmaker whose work has been exhibited internationally, showcases some of his latest films at the April 13 Film Kitchen. The April 13 program will feature four films by Richmond, including Hawking and Ohio, in which he uses multiple exposures and rhythmic editing to recreate the sensation of a river flooding. Richmond will also screen the more abstract Somewhere, the playful What Do You Got? (which incorporates Murraysville's landmark tree sign spelling out the town's name) and Oh Numbness. The April Film Kitchen also includes two computer-animated films by graduates of the Rochester Institute of Technology. Passage, by Brian Vogt, imagines a journey inside famous works of art, while Jung-Mi Yoo's The Legend of Hahoe Masks tells a folkloric tale from Korea. Also featured is Hope, a short video by Dan Stauffer, of Pittsburgh. Richmond and Stauffer will attend for question-and-answer sessions.
