We are dedicated to bringing out the soul of grassroots culture in the city of bridges and helping build a community interconnected with the elements beneath the surface. Our goal is to promote collective creativity through a fluid intersection of people, places, ideas and vibrations. In doing so, we seek to connect independent arts and culture to the urban development of Pittsburgh and unlock the potential energy through the poetry of people in motion....

Map/directions
In the forties and early
fifties, families with children dreaded the summer months when polio epidemics
would sweep the country. There were mass closings of swimming pools, movie
houses, any place kids might congregate. Some towns set up roadblocks to keep
outsiders away. In the cities, residents spent the summer hiding in sweltering
houses. Thousand died, then tens of thousands; more were crippled for life;
hundreds lived trapped in huge iron lungs. Then, when the epidemics were at
their worst, there appeared an unlikely savior from Pittsburgh: a bespectacled
researcher named Jonas Salk. He became, for a time, the most famous man in the
world, and in the popular mind he remains an American saint to this day. But
within the scientific community, he became an outcast, ridiculed and passed over
for the Nobel Prize and even for membership in the National Academy of Science.
This play uncovers the undoing of Salk by a conspiracy of profit-seeking drug
companies, an AMA and federal government terrified at the prospect of
“socialized medicine,” jealous fellow scientists, and Salk’s own hubris. This
drama uncovers the undoing of Salk by a conspiracy of profit-seeking drug
companies, jealous fellow scientists and Salk’s own hubris. A must-see world
premiere. Written, designed and directed by Robert Benedetti.

Exciting, hilarious, magical,

for all animated features to come. The loopy plot involves the club-footed
Madame Souza, who lives with her grandson named Champion, and faithful dog
Bruno. Champion spends years training for the Tour de France but when he's
finally ready, he's kidnapped by the French Mafia. The big rescue includes
Belleville's renowned Triplets - three former music-hall stars - who turn out to
be quite helpful. (Sylvain Chomet; 2003; France; 80 min)

Art Opening: ANA KELLY - réflexions du voyeur
Free | 6-8 pm @ Quiet Storm Coffeehouse 5430 Penn Ave [Friendship].
412-661-9355
www.quietstormcoffee.com
Map/directions
Pittsburgh-based artist Ana
Kelly will exhibit her first solo show of 2004 at the Quiet Storm Café
throughout the month of February. Entitled réflexions du voyeur, the collection
is made up of new pieces from an ongoing series, each of which incorporates
mirrored surfaces as an element of the finished work. The purpose of the
approach is to engage the viewer personally, utilizing a process of literal
reflection in an effort to prompt an internal discourse. How a viewer reacts to
a piece will be dependent not only on the artist's work, but also on the
viewer's feelings about him or her self. Ana has utilized a century-old
mirroring application with much of the work, as well as texturing, and a
shattering process to provide depth and, at times, distortion. Show runs until
February 29.

Opening event for AMP @ The Warhol

Map/directions
In February, The Andy Warhol
Museum will exhibit a group show of small works juried by the curatorial staff
of the Museum. For the first time, local artists are being invited to submit
12"x12" square pieces which will hang in a 4th floor gallery at the Museum on
the North Shore. Submissions for AMP @ The Warhol will be accepted at The Warhol
on January 31 and February 1 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. In addition to the
opportunity for local visual artist to have their work on display at the
world-renown Museum, AMP will create opportunities for the artists to connect to
Pittsburgh patrons. Thomas Sokolowski, Director for The Andy Warhol Museum,
says, "Local artists need to be fed by local collectors. I hope that this
exhibition will 'kick-ass' with collectors by offering them a wide array of
small-sized works by regional artists." To connect Pittsburgh to a broader
community of emerging artists, AMP @ The Warhol will also feature the
internationally-recognized Flat Files by the Pierogi 2000 Gallery in Brooklyn,
New York. The Flat Files are wide, shallow stacks of drawers housing more than
3,000 works by over 700 under-recognized and young, emerging artists from around
the world. "The Flat Files will bring an international array of other artists to
the table. It will be a banquet of art here on Sandusky Street," says Sokolowski.

Louis Kahn, who in 1974 died
bankrupt and alone in New York City's Pennsylvania Station, is considered by
many architectural historians to be the most important architect of the second
half of the 20th century. He left behind a brilliant legacy of intensely
powerful buildings - geometric compositions of brick, concrete and light. Kahn's
dramatic death laid bare a complex personal life of secrets and broken promises.
In this compelling film Kahn's only son, Nathaniel, sets out on a journey to
reconcile his father's life and work. I.M. Pei, Frank Gehry and Philip Johnson
speak movingly of Kahn's work (including the Salk Institute, the Exeter Library,
the Kimbell Art Museum) and the women and children in his life shed light on
this secretive, peripatetic man. (Directed by Nathaniel Kahn; USA; 2003;
118min.)

I.M. Pei, Frank Gehry and Philip Johnson
speak movingly of Kahn's work (including the Salk Institute, the Exeter Library,
the Kimbell Art Museum) and the women and children in his life shed light on
this secretive, peripatetic man. (Directed by Nathaniel Kahn; USA; 2003;
118min.)

Side].

The symposium will educate and
raise awareness to the changing soundscape of the urban environment and its
affect on our health and identity. "The human community is becoming more and
more remote from its environment. We are inundated with an overpopulation of
sounds so much so that acoustic clarity is lost in the sustained ambient noise
of the urban landscape," says Ferraro. The Sonic Bridge Project Sound Symposium
will feature guest speakers City Councilman Bill Peduto, filmmaker Tony Buba,
Exec. Director of South Side Local Development Rick Belloli, architect Robert
McDunn and audiologist Dr. Catherine Palmer. It will also feature sound art
installations by Frank Ferraro, Maurice Rickard, Jay DelGreco and local
musicians Steve Sciulli and Stephen Pellegrino.

$22/$18 | 2:00 PM @ Pittsburgh Playhouse 222 Craft Avenue [Oakland].

Map/directions
In the forties and early
fifties, families with children dreaded the summer months when polio epidemics
would sweep the country. There were mass closings of swimming pools, movie
houses, any place kids might congregate. Some towns set up roadblocks to keep
outsiders away. In the cities, residents spent the summer hiding in sweltering
houses. Thousand died, then tens of thousands; more were crippled for life;
hundreds lived trapped in huge iron lungs.
This
drama uncovers the undoing of Salk by a conspiracy of profit-seeking drug

premiere. Written, designed and directed by Robert Benedetti.

The Mikvah Project, photographs by Janice Rubin and text by Leah Lax
Free | 7-9 PM @ The Jewish Community Center 5738 Forbes Ave [Squirell
Hill].
Map/directions
The American Jewish Museum of
the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh presents the Mikvah Project, a
traveling exhibit of photographs by Janice Rubin and interviews conducted by
Leah Lax documenting the resurgence of the ancient and secret ritual of mikvah
immersion. Mikvah, meaning "collection of natural water," is a tradition that
stems from the Torah-the first five books of the Hebrew Bible-stating laws of
holiness for the Jewish nation. According to the Jewish law, Jewish women are
required to immerse themselves in a ritual bath after their monthly cycle and
before they resume sexual relations. Passed down from mother to daughter from
more than 3,000 years, it is a thoroughly private practice. The Mikvah Project
will be on display from Feb. 6-March 28 in the Fine/Perlow & Weis Gallery and
Berger Gallery, located at the JCC in Squirrel Hill at 5738 Forbes Ave. The
exhibition is open to the public during regular business hours: Monday-Thursday,
6:15 a.m.-10 p.m.; Friday, 6:15 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday, 1-7 p.m.; and Sunday,
7:45 a.m.-6 p.m. The opening reception will be held on Sunday, Feb. 8, from 7-9
p.m., featuring keynote speakers, Janice Rubin and Leah Lax, as well as a
performance by Kol Isha, a local Jewish women's theatre group. The event is free
and open to the public. For more information, please call AJM Director Leslie
Golomb Hartman at (412) 521-8011, ext. 105. Related events include a lecture on
"Bathing, Purity and the Body, " The Mikvah Project in Context featuring

p.m. at the JCC. Also, a panel of area professors in the history of religion
will discuss "Water Rituals in Diverse Cultures," on Sunday, March 21, from 2-4
