We are dedicated to bringing out the soul of grassroots culture in the city of bridges and helping build a community interconnected with the elements beneath the surface. Our goal is to promote collective creativity through a fluid intersection of people, places, ideas and vibrations. In doing so, we seek to connect independent arts and culture to the urban development of Pittsburgh and unlock the potential energy through the poetry of people in motion....

Culture Beneath the Surface:

Mar 24th, 2003 Update –  As usual, massive happenings in the city of bridges.  This week, the scene is heavy with some international flair including the continuing Indian Film Festival @ Pitt,  Thai Night 2004 @ CMU,  The Gamelan Ensemble @ The Brewhouse,  The Amnesty International Film Festival and several other happenings beneath the surface.  International Women's Month continues with spoken work performances w/ Divas! this Thursday @ Contemporary Craft and She...Said this Friday @ SPACE gallery.  Lots of other live music, DJs, art, film and performance happenings throughout the week. So turn off the cable TV and indulge your self with some real culture. Our website is continually undergoing revisions and updates.  Our thanks to several of you who have let us know about some technical difficulties. As most of you know, element 5 is a completely volunteer run website and we solicit no funding or sponsor support in this endeavor. Our goal is to provide up to date cultural info on the local scene, encourage community interactions, and showcase the vibrant eclectic culture of Pittsburgh to the world.  Looking for a "brand" image for our city (without spending $150,000 that could have kept some of our community recreation centers open)? Enter the e5 circle.  As always, please feel free to drop us a message anytime - element5ive@yahoo.com.  Keep your good vibes strong...

- Art Opening: hi-tech / low-tech
Free | 5:00-7:30 pm @ Wood St Galleries 601 Wood St [Downtown]. www.pgharts.org/art/woodstreet.cfm Map/directions

hi-tech / lo-tech features installations incorporating both high and low technologies by Montréal artists Jean-Pierre Gauthier, Diane Landry and the artist collective Plumbing for beginners. The show opens on Friday, March 26, with a free reception from 5-7:30 p.m., and closes on Saturday, May 15, 2004. The artists will discuss their work at Wood Street Galleries on Saturday, March 27, 1 p.m. WDUQ is the proud media sponsor of this exhibit. "The common thread in this exhibit is that each artist takes everyday found objects and manipulates them with computer technology. There is a strong visual and kinetic component in each installation, complemented by sound-which I think is very characteristic of Montréal artists," says Murray Horne, curator of Wood Street Galleries. Within a lo-tech context, Jean-Pierre Gauthier's installations produce sound with motors, pumps, water, found objects and instruments (whistles, flutes, a grand piano, drums) that are all interconnected in large, interactive and functional systems. Part of his work is about transformation processes and useless, obsessive, repetitive cleaning actions. Le Grand Ménage is an out of control, automatic cleaning machine that resembles a janitor's cart. Molded objects made of fresh solid soap are shaped like cleaning product bottles, hand paper rolls and plungers. These are then subjected to water-spraying mechanisms that cause them to bubble, dissolve and transform. Other objects perform a series of recurring actions related to cleaning that produce sounds with motors, air valves and the like, filling the room with irregular, disorganized and unpredictable noises. In Species: Rut, his newest work commissioned by Wood Street Galleries, Gauthier takes ordinary materials which are kinetically operated by microprocessors and electric motors.

- Bollywood: A Festival of Indian Films
Free | 6 pm @ Alumni Hall 4227 Fifth Avenue [University of Pittsburgh, Oakland]. www.pitt.edu/~nisg/maps/B/bellefieldhall062702.pdf Map/directions

The University of Pittsburgh's FESTIVAL OF INDIAN FILMS will use the current familiarity of "Bollywood" to bring together practitioners, scholars, students, and others interested in Indian cinema over a four-week period of film screenings and discussion. The festival demonstrates the range of Indian filmmaking, including "art" and "commercial" cinema, documentary and feature films, and mainstream Hindi and regional Tamil cinema. Given the geo-political importance of South Asia, this event will encourage discussion on the role of popular culture in shaping contemporary global identities. Entitled "Entertainment and Anxiety," the festival showcases films that represent both the entertainment value of Indian cinema and its responses to current national concerns. The films explore issues such as terrorism, ethnic strife, urban corruption, religious identities, and gender norms. For complete film schedule, check the asian studies webpage .

Ray Geiger was a young artist and architect who resided on Pittsburgh's North Side. After Ray's sudden and unexpected passing this fall, a group of his family and close friends have taken on the daunting task of cataloging his vast collection of paintings and drawings. They are also preparing a group of Ray's large mixed media paintings on canvas, and many other works on paper for public viewing during this retrospective exhibit. This is a rare opportunity to view, and for some to become familiar with, this extraordinary man's legacy. With Live music by The Working Poor...

Friday, March 26, 2004 - Film: The Battle of Algiers

After almost 40 years, this riveting re-release has lost nothing. Shot on location cinema verite style, and starring actual Algerian National Liberation Front rebels, this remains one of the most gut-wrenching war films of all time. Struggling to rid their country of French colonialism, the last rebel standing in Casbah, along with his band of terrorists, paints the streets red with the blood of their enemies. Soon the entire Algerian population is involved. Children shoot soldiers at point blank range; women (disguised as chic Europeans) plant bombs in cafes. A highly-decorated French officer is called in to quash the uprising, but Algiers is on fire and the battle has just begun. Initially banned by the French government, it quickly won wide international acclaim, including an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film. Challenged by guerrilla warfare in Iraq, the Pentagon recently held a screening of The Battle of Algiers. In French and Arabic with new improved subtitles. (Directed by Gillo Pontecorvo; 1965; France/Italy; 123 min)

Continuing this tradition of reverence, Phipps will join Jim Donovan, composer, percussionist and founding/current member of Rusted Root, to present the world premiere performance of Air. Water. Rhythm., a musical program born out of the Spring Flower Show. "Birth, growth, death, rebirth - the whole life cycle is about rhythm, and water is the element that helps to create and connect it all," notes Donovan. "Phipps is such a natural partner and influence for me. I am so excited about this opportunity and what we both hope will be a long-term collaboration." Donovan's desire to share the power of rhythm first hand to people has resulted in his construction of an educational drumming workshop program that he teaches at schools, universities, festivals and specialty venues throughout the United States. Donovan also reaches listeners with his recordings: Revelation #9 is Donovan's latest CD, but also he has recorded two ambient solo CDs, four instructional drumming CDs and his drumming can be heard on Live on Earth, the CD from Triloka recording artist Krishna Das. For Air. Water.Rhythm., Donovan will be joined by Life In Balance, a musical duo comprised of Steve Sciulli, Shakuhachi flute, and Ami Sciulli, Quartz Crystal Bowls. Life In Balance previously has performed at Phipps and is known for creating an extra ordinary sonic environment by using enhanced Japanese and global instruments.

The Amnesty International Film Festival-screening annually in Seattle, Salt Lake City, Laramie, Pittsburgh and West Hollywood, along with other special engagements-is proud to present its 2nd annual program in Pittsburgh. This year's festival features 17 films by talented filmmakers from around the world who work against long odds, short finances, and threatening politics to bring to the screen these powerful stories of human struggle, sacrifice, and triumph. The Amnesty International Film Festival is dedicated to bringing these stories to our communities so that our colleagues, neighbors, and friends can see for themselves the diverse perspectives and many challenges facing people in every part of the world. Both because of the tremendous global reach of Amnesty International, and because we have focused on building relationships directly with filmmakers, production companies, television stations, and other film festivals around the world, we are able to offer programming that in many cases is not available anywhere else in the U.S. These include documentary films-some feature length and others shorter-fictional films, animated pieces, and occasionally foreign broadcasts that are otherwise inaccessible to U.S. audiences. In addition, we are also proud to screen some of the most noteworthy and celebrated documentary films made here in the U.S. each year, including some that will go on to air on major television networks. But most importantly, we hope to offer our communities an opportunity to see, to learn, and to care. And should some who attend be moved to action, Amnesty International is ready to help you get involved. Check the Festival Website for Details. Sponsored by 91.3 FM WYEP, CP, The East Liberty Presbyterian Church, {GH Filmmakers and New Ray Films.

For Galactic, the past two years have been ones of rapid evolution. Born in the early '90s, after Washington DC punk guitarist Jeff Raines and bassist Robert Mercurio relocated to New Orleans, the pair found themselves intoxicated by the soulful sounds of the Meters, Professor Longhair, and Dr. John. The cross-pollination resulted in the formation of a sextet with their own trademark jazz-funk-rock fusion sound. Their new album, Ruckus, infuses elements of hip hop and electronic music into the mix.

Wednesday, March 31, 2004 - Film: The Amnesty International Film Festival
$5 | 8 pm @ Melwood Screening Room 477 Melwood Avenue [N. Oakland]. 412-682-4111 www.pghfilmmakers.org Map/directions
