We are dedicated to bringing out the soul of grassroots culture in the city of bridges and helping build a community interconnected with the elements beneath the surface. Our goal is to promote collective creativity through a fluid intersection of people, places, ideas and vibrations. In doing so, we seek to connect independent arts and culture to the urban development of Pittsburgh and unlock the potential energy through the poetry of people in motion....

Set in northern Lapland at the close of World War II, this is a warm tale of unlikely freindships. Veiko, a Finnish sniper and pacifist, is deserted by his troop, chained to a rock, and dressed in a Nazi uniform. At the same time, a Russian soldier named Ivan barely survives a bombing that wipes out all his companions. Eventually the two find each other and meet up with Anni, a resourceful reindeer farmer. Together they make an odd group (none understands each other’s language) of charming survivors. Cultural differences abound, but mistrust gives way to a brotherhood of sorts in this wonderfully humanistic film. In Russian with subtitles. (Directed by Alexander Rogozhkin; Russia; 2003; 104 min)

Sat Oct 4th -  LIVE FUNK LEGEND:  The Poogie Bell Band
$8 | 10pm-2am @
Club Cafe.
The sound of Poogie Bell's drums is what you hear on many of the world's finest jazz, neo-soul, R&B and hip-hop records. Performer, record producer, composer, and arranger, you've heard his work with artists including Chaka khan, Marcus Miller, Roberta Flack, Erykah Badu, David Bowie, David Sanborn, Al Jarreau, Vanessa Williams and Randy Crawford. Native of New York and a second generation musician he has been immersed in music since he was born. Taking cues from his father, a jazz musician and professor of music, Poogie has always had an inherent connection to music. As hard as it may be to believe, he started playing at the age of ten months old and made his concert debut when he was two and half at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Hall with his father. By the ripe old age of five he'd already appeared on The Mike Douglas Show with Pearl Bailey. As a kid it wasn't unusual for Poogie to see the likes of drummer Max Roach, saxophonist Ornett Coleman, pianist Marylou Williams, bassists, Paul Chambers, Ron Carter and Richard Davis in his living room jammin' with his father. Growing up he hung out with fellow musicians Omar Hakim, Marcus Miller, Lenny White and Bernard Wright, Weldon Irvine all of whom supported and influenced each other musically. Poogie's first "real" gig was with Tom brown, Weldon Irvine and Hugh Masakela. Then came a tour with one of the creators of what we know as hip-hop, Afrika Bambaata and the Soulsonic Force and then with the Force MD's, a Temptations-style vocal group who were the first to incorporate R&B and hip-hop. "Touch and Go", a song written by Poogie for the Force MD's, won him the ASCAP Writer's Award for Top 10 Singles in 1998. From his hard work, Poogie was able to break into the traditional R&B world touring and recording with artists Freddie Jackson, Phyllis Hyman and Chaka Khan. He came into the New Jack Swing era working with Kieth Sweat, Teddy Riley, SWV and New Edition. He continues to tour and record with Marcus Miller, Alex Bugnon, Victor Bailey and Erykah Badu, among others. now Poogie is doing his own project with Poogie Band. The Poogie Bell Band also features Kevin Barefoot (Bass), Luke Williams (guitar), and Howie Alexander (Keys).

Based on the real Francisco (born in 1900 and sold as a slave by his mother at age 7) the film is a voluptuous, hot-blooded portrait of a social outcast. Told mostly in flashback, this story of a dazzling and unorthodox cabaret star also delves deep into the soul of Rio de Janeiro’s underworld. In Portuguese with subtitles. (Directed by Karim Ainouz; Brazil; 2003; 105 min)

or www.pgharts.org
Two sitar virtuosos in one family, Pandit Ravi Shankar and his prodigiously talented daughter Anoushka, promise a soul-enriching experience with their highly improvisational Indian classical music. No other Indian musician has the international reputation of the “king of strings,” Pandit Ravi Shankar, now in his early 80s. Composer, teacher and writer, Ravi is renowned throughout the world for bringing Indian music to the West. Having already made a name for himself in the late 50s and early 60s, it was his teacher/friend relationship with former Beatles star George Harrison in 1966 that led to the subsequent widespread use of sitars and Indian melodic ideas in rock music. Over several decades, Ravi has played the world’s greatest stages, sharing his love of music and life with people from all countries. He continues his musical journey, Full Circle, in concerts with his daughter and protégé, Anoushka, the only artist to be trained completely by Ravi. “His years have brought only wisdom and transparent technique, which allow his music to speak—and sing—with excessive joy.” – (The Seattle Times)

The Steel Valley Arts Council invites you to their gallery, art space 303 to view ""USA PATRIOT ART -- Cartooning and Free Speech in War Time"" In the aftermath of September 11, freedom of speech has been under attack. Political cartoonists are not immune. In some cities cartoonists have been fired or lost free-lance jobs because of cartoons critical of U.S. policy or for using ""wrong"" metaphors. Even nationally-known artists, such as Boondocks cartoonists Aaron McGruder and Ted Rall, have been censored or repudiated. In response, Gary Huck, Mike Kanopacki, Matt Wuerker, and writer Alec Dubro put together a show of cartoons from 41 editorial cartoonists from the U.S. and Mexico. USA PATRIOT ART is sponsored by the Battle of Homestead Foundation. Directions: Take the Homestead Grays Bridge formerly the High Level bridge and make a left onto East Eighth Ave. Go two blocks to Ann and Eighth the gallery is located on the left second building down.
