We are dedicated to bringing out the soul of grassroots culture in the city of bridges and helping build a community interconnected with the elements beneath the surface. Our goal is to promote collective creativity through a fluid intersection of people, places, ideas and vibrations. In doing so, we seek to connect independent arts and culture to the urban development of Pittsburgh and unlock the potential energy through the poetry of people in motion....

Told mostly in flashback, this story of a dazzling and unorthodox cabaret star also delves deep into the soul of Rio de Janeiro’s underworld. In Portuguese with subtitles. Fri Oct 10th FILM:  Wattstax - 30th anniversary edition
$5 | 7:30 pm @ The Oaks Theater 310 Allegheny River Blvd [ Oakmont ]. Info: 412-828-3611
or www.theoakstheater.com
Wattstax the concert and Wattstax the film were unprecedented events for the Los Angeles African-American community and a source of great pride. In the weeks surrounding the filming of the concert, the predominately African-American film crews took to the streets, recording candid interviews with local African-Americans and capturing a unique, unvarnished view of the Watts community. The crew also filmed then little known comic Richard Pryor's biting insights on the black experience which frame the entire Wattstax movie. The mise-en-scene of Wattstax is all undiluted summer of '72 funk, jive and soul as expressed in and around the streets of Watts. Interspersed throughout Wattstax - The Special Edition are the dynamic fashion, knowing humor, indomitable courage, uncanny insight, and undeniable style of Black Los Angeles. From conception to realization, Stax Records was the driving force behind staging the Wattstax concert in conjucntion with The Watts Summer Festival. They had the foresight and vision to commission a documentary of not just the concert, amazing as it was, but of African-American life in and around Watts as well.

Two passionate Gypsy singers force the flamenco-possessed men and women to dance faster, harder, longer. Other performers clap and shout their encouragement as the stage erupts into “a Soul-Stirring Tour-de-Force of Theater” (The New York Times). Born of passion and precision, Noche Flamenca was founded in Madrid in 1993 by artistic director Martin Santangelo and his wife Soledad Barrio. Now one of Spain’s most successful flamenco companies, Noche Flamenca insists on the communal ambience that lies at the heart and soul of flamenco, preserving the essence, purity and integrity of one of the most complicated and mysterious of all art forms.

A story of intrigue, romance and war based on actual events in Thailand’s 16th century, this was an audience favorite at Sundance. With a lush visual grandeur worthy of Cecil B. DeMille, the story unfolds as the country’s peace and prosperity is threatened by civil war. Sat Oct 11th -  DANCE PERFORMANCE: Shatarupa - The Splendorous Myths and Divinities of India w/ Sreyashi Dey + Guru Manorajan Pradhan w/ the Odissi Dance Troupe from India.
$8/$10 | 5:00pm @ The Kelly Strayhorn Theater 5941 Penn Ave [ East Liberty ]. Info: 412-363-3000

This performance will showcase the rich classical traditions of classical Indian dance in the Odissi style performed by well-known artists from India and Pittsburgh. Srishti Artistic Director Sreyashi Dey will be joined by Guru Manoranjan Pradhan and an Odissi troupe from Bhubaneswar, India for the performance in Pittsburgh as well as touring in several other cities in the US. The performance will visually capture the many splendoured mythology of India, the many Gods and Goddesses and their wondrous legends. The traditional choreographies by the legendary Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and other renowned Gurus such as Gangadhar Pradhan and Pankaj Charan Das, restaged in ensemble formats, will capture the grace and beauty of the Odissi style.  The first part of the program will feature traditional pieces such as: • Shiva Panchaka Mangalacharan (invocation to Lord Shiva) • Bilahari Pallavi (rhythmic piece based on Raga Bilahari) • Naba Durga (on the nine forms of the Goddess Durga) • Ashtapadi (depicting love stories of Lord Krishna and Radha, from the Sanskrit classic Geeta Govindam) • Mokshya (dance symbolizing the ultimate release or liberation). The second part of the program will feature a Dance Drama, Kanchi Abhijan, based on a myth surrounding Lord Jagannath, the presiding deity of Orissa, the land of Odissi dance. India has had a strong tradition of dance dramas since ancient times. While many of the dance dramas are in various regional folk styles, classical dance dramas use highly evolved technical vocabulary of classical dance and music, combined with traditions of dramatic story-telling to create enduring works of classic choreography. In keeping with Srishti's presentation style, the performance will be accessible to all audiences irrespective of age or ethnicity, augmented by English narration to explain the nuances of the choreographies to the audience.

Sat Oct 11th - LIVE:  Spearhead
9pm @ Mr. Small's Theater 40 Riverfront Dr. [ Millvale ]. Info: 412-821-8388 or www.mrsmalls.com or www.spearheadvibrations.com

Michael Franti's Spearhead is a rare hip-hop bird. Where other rappers spew chest-thumping misogyny and gangsta boasts, Spearhead makes articulate social arguments while trading melodies with singer Mary Harris. While DJs borrow, sample and loop their beats, Franti leads his kick-ass live band on a groove tour through the history of funk. Franti's musical adventurism got its start in the late '80s with San Francisco's Beatnigs, an angry punk riot of rhythm and politics. His next group, the critically-lauded Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprosy (Franti with percussionist Rono Tse), sounded something like a cross between the Last Poets and Gil Scott-Heron. They created sharp and dizzying sound collages to match the impressive scope (international events, history, social disease) of his politically conscious, though occasionally overzealous, rhymes. Though 1992's Hypocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury" had several tracks that matched the intensity of the single, "Television, The Drug Of The Nation," Franti put the Heroes on extended vacation after just one CD. He named his new project Spearhead, after the chief of the Zulu Tribe. With Spearhead, Franti moved away from confrontational polemics and started marrying his social calls-to-action in party-time bombs and stretched-out funk jams. This new balance of brain-expansion and booty-bumping fuels Spearhead's bristling 1994 debut, Home. The CD's focus on HIV is carried home by a live, pan-style (i.e., all things are possible) groove-machine band. Spearhead had a hit in 1995 with "Hole In The Bucket," a sly rewrite of a Jamaican folk song. In 1997, the 15 tracks of Chocolate Supa Highway showed off the band's increasing rhythmic diversity while targeting inhumane prisons as Franti's latest cause.

Sun Oct 12th -  DANCE PERFORMANCE: Shatarupa - The Splendorous Myths and Divinities of India w/ Sreyashi Dey + Guru Manorajan Pradhan w/ the Odissi Dance Troupe from India.
