We are dedicated to bringing out the soul of grassroots culture in the city of bridges and helping build a community interconnected with the elements beneath the surface. Our goal is to promote collective creativity through a fluid intersection of people, places, ideas and vibrations. In doing so, we seek to connect independent arts and culture to the urban development of Pittsburgh and unlock the potential energy through the poetry of people in motion....

t was the opening night film of the Three Rivers Film Festival in 1997, filling the Byham Theater. And with all this talk about movies with a Pittsburgh connection, we thought we’d enjoy seeing this one again. Filmed entirely in the Pittsburgh area, The Journey is the story of a retired widower from India who moves in with his Americanized son and his family. The story begins with the expected tension (often comical) caused by the cultural and generational collision, but eventually arrives at a deeper understanding. This warm and wise story features two of India’s most renowned actors, Roshan Seth and Saeed Jaffrey, along with some local actors. (Directed by Harish Saluja; Pittsburgh; 1997; 97 min)

$8 | 10pm-2am @ The Shadow Lounge 5972 Baum Blvd [ East Liberty ]. Info: 412-363-8277 or
seventhmovement@yahoo.com
or www.7thmovement.net
The sound of Poogie Bell's drums is what you hear on many of the world's finest jazz, neo-soul, R&B and hip-hop records. Performer, record producer, composer, and arranger, you've heard his work with artists including Chaka khan, Marcus Miller, Roberta Flack, Erykah Badu, David Bowie, David Sanborn, Al Jarreau, Vanessa Williams and Randy Crawford. Native of New York and a second generation musician he has been immersed in music since he was born. Taking cues from his father, a jazz musician and professor of music, Poogie has always had an inherent connection to music. As hard as it may be to believe, he started playing at the age of ten months old and made his concert debut when he was two and half at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Hall with his father. By the ripe old age of five he'd already appeared on The Mike Douglas Show with Pearl Bailey. As a kid it wasn't unusual for Poogie to see the likes of drummer Max Roach, saxophonist Ornett Coleman, pianist Marylou Williams, bassists, Paul Chambers, Ron Carter and Richard Davis in his living room jammin' with his father. Growing up he hung out with fellow musicians Omar Hakim, Marcus Miller, Lenny White and Bernard Wright, Weldon Irvine all of whom supported and influenced each other musically. Poogie's first "real" gig was with Tom brown, Weldon Irvine and Hugh Masakela. Then came a tour with one of the creators of what we know as hip-hop, Afrika Bambaata and the Soulsonic Force and then with the Force MD's, a Temptations-style vocal group who were the first to incorporate R&B and hip-hop. "Touch and Go", a song written by Poogie for the Force MD's, won him the ASCAP Writer's Award for Top 10 Singles in 1998. From his hard work, Poogie was able to break into the traditional R&B world touring and recording with artists Freddie Jackson, Phyllis Hyman and Chaka Khan. He came into the New Jack Swing era working with Kieth Sweat, Teddy Riley, SWV and New Edition. He continues to tour and record with Marcus Miller, Alex Bugnon, Victor Bailey and Erykah Badu, among others. now Poogie is doing his own project with Poogie Band. The Poogie Bell Band also features Kevin Barefoot (Bass), Luke Williams (guitar), and Howie Alexander (Keys).

$7 | 4pm & 7pm @ Hamburg Studio of City Theatre 13th and Bingham Streets one block south of East Carson [ Southside ]. Info: 412-881-6888
or www.pittsburghnewworks.org
The final week of the Pittsburgh New Works Festival's 13th season presents world premieres of three one-act plays, to be presented as triple bills. "Virgin Rock" is named for its setting: an Alabama town in 1960. Amidst civil unrest, we learn that the town holds a dark secret. Written by Kevin Christopher Snipes, the play is produced by Sunday Night Live. "Negative Velocity" offers glimpses of moments in the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb. Is someone passing atomic secrets to the Soviets? The season ends with "Bernard" and the setting returns to the present time, as the play demonstrates that pointe shoes and guns aren't always what they seem to be. The playwright, Rich Pliskin of New Jersey, works in corporate communications and is a periodic commentator on National Public Radio's "Marketplace." Produced by CCAC South and directed by Laura McCarthy.

In a Bohemian neighborhood, circa 1932, Joao Francisco is a lean, fiery-eyed street fighter and prostitute who transforms himself into “Madame Sata,” a glittering transvestite singer, storyteller and Brazilian version of his idol, Josephine Baker. Based on the real Francisco (born in 1900 and sold as a slave by his mother at age 7) the film is a voluptuous, hot-blooded portrait of a social outcast. Told mostly in flashback, this story of a dazzling and unorthodox cabaret star also delves deep into the soul of Rio de Janeiro’s underworld. In Portuguese with subtitles. (Directed by Karim Ainouz; Brazil; 2003; 105 min)

t was the opening night film of the Three Rivers Film Festival in 1997, filling the Byham Theater.

Mon Sept 29th - The Dark Night Cabaret
$5 | 8pm @ Studio Theater, basement of Cathederal of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh between Fifth & Forbes on Bigelow [ Oakland ]. Info: 412-683-4467

The Dark Night Cabaret series resumes at its new home, The University of Pittsburgh’s Studio Theatre, in the basement of the Cathedral of Learning, Oakland, Pittsburgh. Please note that we have moved from The Henry Heymann Theatre. Admission is $5.00 at the door, $4.00 with student I.D. The show begins at 8:00 PM on the theatre’s main stage, where Pitt alumnus Robert Isenberg hosts the evening’s festivities. Currently a contributing writer for Pulp, Isenberg will read from his new serial novel "Soma". Pitt Repertory Theatre will perform excerpts from their upcoming production of "Everything in the Garden" by Edward Albee, directed by Jeff Cordell. This seldom-produced subversive dark comedy is classic Albee social satire. The production features the talents of actors Devin Malcolm, Diane Mazeppa, Benjamin Blazer, Liz Labacz, and Brian Jones. Next, American singer Lyse (aka Lisa Jarvis) performs music that reflects her life-long fascination with Japanese culture. Performing her original Japanese lyrics set to the music of composer John Gorr, the Pitt Japanese and Business student describes her sound as a “cross-cultural hybrid”. Next up, singer/songwriter/guitarist Paul Tabachneck returns to the DNC stage with his new power pop quartet Everybody Wins, featuring guitarist Izzy Arlet, bassist Mark Pfaff, and Troy Cramer on drums. The band will perform songs from their 2002 EP, "Five Songs for Five Bucks", along with new material. And finally, glam rock purveyors Adam Evil and the Outside Royalty perform a rare acoustic set. Converging in Pittsburgh from various parts of the Eastern and Midwestern US, the band supplements the traditional rock band configuration of guitar/bass/drums by adding synthesizer, electric violin, and cello to the mix. The band will perform songs from their upcoming release "Sleeping with Strangers". The Dark Night Cabaret is an ongoing monthly performance series designed to provide a forum for the local arts community and to facilitate the development of new work. The producers are Dave Mansueto and Mark Whitehead.

Once in a great while, an artist emerges that has a profound effect on popular culture. Burning Spear is such an artist. A certifiable musical legend, Spear’s career has already spanned over three decades and shows no sign of slowing down. His concerts regularly last over two hours, a live show that delivers more energy and vibrancy than many rock and roll bands that are half his age. Its no surprise that Spear was the only reggae artist included in the 2002 music issue of Vanity Fair. But it is not just the music that generates the excitement, it is also the message. Carrying the torch for the gospel of Marcus Garvey, Burning Spear is one of the single greatest proponents of self-determination and self-reliance for all African descendants; but his message is not exclusively based on the teachings of Garvey. Through his music, Burning Spear has consistently been able to educate, inform, and uplift people the world over with his positive message based on honesty, peace, and love.
