Subject: element 5 / Momentum

Hi Geoff,

here's a few lines about the next "Momentum" event we're planning
for september (we'll have a proper PR out soon):

Tbe actual event:

Who: element 5
What: Momentum
When: Saturday Sept 13th, 2003
Where: Shadow Lounge
Why: well, here’s what it is…

This particular "Momentum" event (with a pre-party at Club Havana
on Thurs Sept 11th) is a one year anniversary for element 5. What
we want folks to know is not necessarily who we are, but what we
represent.

element 5 basically evolved in response to the negative attitude
that a lot of young people have been harboring about this city.
Stuff along the lines of:

“there’s nothing to do here…”
“This city has nothing…”
“Pittsburgh is an old-time industrial steel town…”
“I wanna get the hell outta here…”

element 5 is a 180 degree turn around from that attitude. It’s
basically been a continuous effort to promote a positive and more
constructive perspective on this city and its potential as a truly
cosmopolitan center.

One of the ways we tried to showcase this potential has been
through the various events we’ve organized or helped out with (The
Momentum Series, MINIm’s Funky Monkey and Jazz Be Jazz Festivals,
TheFLUX After parties, Moonstarr @ The Warhol, various art + music
happenings). In addition, many of the people at the core of
element 5 have been pushing the same ideals through their own
personal involvement in the city's various underground cultural
scenes.

Our goal in organizing these events has been largely to create
spaces where people can experience first hand the new culture
that’s growing in the city and introduce folks to the concept of
individual and community-based efforts to build a city that is
multicultural, cosmopolitan, and full of creative energy with huge
potental.

To further this goal, we initiated a second project, and that was
to build the element 5 website into an informational hub to
connect the city’s current underground cultural explosion (it’s
amazing all that’s happened just in the course of one year) to the
technological and urban development of city, because in the long-
term forecast, the two are intimately connected.

With our one year anniversary, we want to celebrate the emergence
of the underground above ground. If anyone’s wondering where the
future of this city lies, they might try looking beneath the
surface. If they do, they’ll discover a large cross-pollinating
network of young creative people – one that includes artists,
small businesses, cultural spaces, community groups, young
professionals, high-tech junkies, and countless individuals with
an eye to the 21st century. And if they’re curious about where to
meet these folks, a good starting point is Momentum.

I guess that's a brief intro to element 5 and the momentum
concept. Would be happy to talk with you more. Thanks so much for
your continued support (and for the mention in PILP's own one year
anniversary) - we really appreciate it!

hope all is well.

peace,
ashwin
