The BRIDGE CITY program book is hot off the press containing 45 of the 46 images in the exhibition; poetry by boice-Terrel Allen, Christiane D., and DJ Brewer; artist statement and memoir by kamau ware. This $5 program book will be free (at least the first one) all night at the book signing. Artists celebrated in the exhibition will be there to sign your book as we celebrate a new look for the Steel City. Ben Opie is one of the most in demand musicians in the 412. His compositions reflect varied interests and wide-ranging taste, mostly versed in jazz composition and performance, but also references to avant garde, experimental, rock, and modern concert music. Ben currently acts as director of OPEK, a 10-15 piece Sun Ra-inspired creative music ensemble playing original arrangements as well as works by Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Anthony Braxton, Herbie Nichols, Sonny Clark, as well as original works by Opie, John Purse, and Ralph Guzzi. OPEK has turned heads and amazed listeners with each performance. Marshall Allen is one of the original members and current leader of the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra. Henry Grimes is the master bassist who's played along side equally legendary jazz musicians such as Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Haynes, Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Sunny Murray, Perry Robinson, Sonny Rollins, Roswell Rudd, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, Charles Tyler, McCoy Tyner, Rev. Frank Wright, and many more. 'Nuff said. With up with Pittsburgh's immpecable Thoth Trio (Ben Opie from OPEK and Dave Throckmorton/Paul Thompson from BEAM), this evening is sure to be one of the most memorable shows of 2005.

Saffronia is a staged reading of a new play by Christiane D. Leach chronicling the life of a young mulatto slave girl stolen from her mother, transformed in a New Orleans brothel, sold at a Fancy Girl auction, bought by a young man, at once her master, as well as her lover. Saffronia examines the hidden, often romanticized American history of mulatto slavery and the inherent sexual deviance that underlies breeding for profit. There will be a Talk-Back following all performances.

Korean Music & Dance: Poongmul Nori

Poongmul Nori is a traditional Korean percussion music that combines ritual, dance, theatre and acrobatics. Its origins date back 4,000 years. Samul Nori is the concert genre of this agricultural ritual. Six members of the Nori Company will provide a one-hour program of this traditional dance and music form.
