Musicland failure no surprise
Business Journal (Minneapolis/St. Paul) - April 7, 2003
Andrew Tellijohn, Staff reporter

Twin Cities music retailers aren't surprised that Musicland became such
a
disappointment to Best Buy Co. Inc. that it now wants to dump the
2-year-old acquisition.

They were more surprised when Richfield-based Best Buy announced that
it
was purchasing the struggling music retailer for $685 million.

Independent music dealers and other industry observers said Musicland
Stores Corp.'s retail model was out of date at the time. Its mall-based
price structure conflicted with Best Buy's big-box, low-price strategy
to
use cheap CDs and movies as loss leaders to get customers into stores
to
buy more profitable electronics. It also came at a time when other
discounters, especially Wal-Mart, were taking a bigger chunk of the CD
market.

Broken record
Falling music sales shake up retailers; Streetside, Wherehouse close
some
stores
by Chad Garrison, St. Louis Business Journal

Saturday, April 5, the Streetside Records store on South Grand
Boulevard
will shut its doors for good. Its quiet ending, announced only by a
non-descript "SALE" banner outside the store, is symptomatic of a much
larger change occurring among local music retailers.

Swiftly and silently, record stores here are shutting their doors as
big
box retailers, Internet downloads and compact disc copies eat into
sales.

Novice guitar slingers set down briefcases, pick up 'axes'
Cincinnati Business Courier - April 7, 2003
by Karen Bells, Senior Editor-Sections

There's a lot of pressure on a businessperson these days: Improve the
bottom line. Land new clients. Endure the mocking stares of teens every
week in your guitar teacher's waiting room.

It's a small price to pay for 53-year-old Tim Gibson, who started
taking
guitar lessons in his 40s "to get in touch with my musical muse; I
quickly
discovered that my inner Hendrix was in sharp contrast with my outer
self."

No matter. Perfection is hardly the point for novice guitar-slingers in
their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond.

"It's just fun. And I figured I'm 52 -- why not?" said Rosie O'Boyle,
assistant dean for student development at the University of Dayton. "I
always wanted to learn, and I always wanted to be Paul McCartney's
girlfriend."

written by John Cameron Mitchell
music and lyrics by Stephen Trask

A gender-crossed glam rocker immigrates to America, determined to
become an
international star. Hedwig's heartfelt story explodes into a
high-voltage
rock concert with one show-stopper after another. Brash, raucous, and
bawdily funny, this is the regional premiere of the award-winning New
York
sensation.

City Theatre taps local talent for 'Hedwig' musical

By Rob Rossi
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, January 21, 2003

Tall Dude with mess-curly hair, wearing an army helmet decorated keenly
by
a twisted leopard-print scarf, a killer bright orange T-shirt, equally
worn
blue jeans and black Chuck Taylors, and a bass guitar that hangs low
from
his broad shoulders.

This is Pittsburgh, Hedwig … what do you think?

"Awesome."

She is nothing if not sincere, which is why she is here inside the main
stage of City Theatre on this flagpole-freezing Saturday afternoon — a
moonlight mile from the bright lights of New York City — overseeing
auditions for the latest, greatest reincarnation of the world's most
rawk
revolving-door glam band, "The Angry Inch."

And Dan Barone, Tall Dude — thanks a lot to his style — has, uh, made
the cut.

Ouch!

Yeah, that was a low blow. Hedwig is a bit sensitive in that area, what
with that botched sex change and all.

But isn't the sensitivity part of her charm? Part of what separates her
up-and-(mostly) down tale from those of the other underdogs? Part of
what
has led audiences to crowd theatres from Los Angeles to Boston for the
funniest and strangest rock musical — the soundtrack to her life — this
side of Berlin?

Maybe. Maybe not.

Anyway, Tall Dude, with his distinctively understated trick of keeping
his
back to the empty maroon seats during Local Honey's rip though a cover
of
"Ziggy Stardust," has a lock on one of the sought-after callbacks for
Sunday's final jam sessions — the ones that will spawn the local
musicians
most worthy and capable of backing Hedwig in May, when she leads "The
Angry
Inch" on the Pittsburgh leg of her current tour.

Tall Dude is in … for now. His fellow music mad hatters in Local Honey

Alexei Plotnicov (guitar, babushka) and God of Fortune (drums, winter
cap),
and Becky Corrigan (vocals, nothing) — aren't coming along for the
ride.

Today's lesson in Rock Star 101: This rock 'n' roll life ain't easy,
kids.

"These will all be musicians Hedwig picks, and they'll be playing her
songs. This is her band," acknowledges Brad Rouse, Hedwig's tour
manager.
"And this group needs to have … an energy, because she'll be going all
night on that stage."

Surviving a six-hour-plus workout of about a hundred of Pittsburgh's
certainly most ambitious musical talents, not to mention a veggie
burrito,
with only a slight smudge to her hot pink lipstick as damage, proves
Hedwig
indeed has the stamina to back up Rouse's prediction.

But what about the band?
