Art of Light Family Workshop

All ages welcome
in conjunction with the 2003 Pittsburgh International Science and Technology Festival
 

What do art, light, volcanic craters and the solar system have in common?
Can you tell the difference between reflection and refraction?
Have you ever seen light that looks three-dimensional?
Discover the answers and much more, as you step into rooms of glowing color and shape, walk around a 27-foot model of a volcanic crater and discover how artists use light to create works of art! Learn about how your eyes see as you explore art, astronomy and perception. After exploring the exhibition James Turrell: Into the Light, create your own original designs that catch, reflect and create colors, shapes and light!

Members, enjoy a FREE member's only monthly brunch, from 11 AM to 1 PM the last Sunday of the month.
This FREE brunch includes:

  • A screening of the video documentation of artist James Turrell's March 12 lecture, Plato's Cave and the Light Within.
     
  • A tour of the James Turrell: Into the Light exhibition and Gasworks, a 12-ft. fiberglass sphere into which visitors are rolled into to experience a series of flashing light patterns. THIS IS THE LAST MEMBER'S BRUNCH TO EXPERIENCE THE ENTIRE JAMES TURRELL INTO THE LIGHT EXHIBITION AND GASWORKS. The exhibition ends April 30!

A new musical by Jonathan Larson, the 1996 Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize - winner for RENT. A musical look at facing a crossroad in life and holding onto your dreams, tick, tick...BOOM! tells the story of a young composer on the brink of turning 30 and falling into oblivion. With fourteen songs, ten characters, three actors and a band, tick, tick...BOOM! takes you on the playwright/composer's journey that led to the Broadway blockbuster musical, RENT. tick, tick...BOOM! stars Christian Campbell, Nicole Ruth Sneeson, and Wilson Cruz (Ricky from the television hit, My So-Called Life).
 

Tickets for tick, tick...BOOM! are $46 and $49 for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday evening performances. Urban Garden Party
June 13 and 14

The Mattress Factory will host its annual summer Urban Garden Party on June 13 and 14, 2003. The two-day community celebration incorporates educational art, theater, dancing and musical activities.
 

The Evening Garden Party on Friday, June 13 from 6:30 PM - 12 AM benefits the Mattress Factory's distinctive programs and features assorted foods by area caterers, museum tours, dancing and a silent auction. Co-chairs for the Evening Garden Party are Caryn Rubinoff and Craig Dunham, and Don and Bea Carter.

The Community and Family Garden Party on Saturday, June 14 from 11 AM - 5 PM, features educational activities and free entertainment for children and adults. Families will construct their own Garden Books, experiment with sun prints, enjoy interactive storytelling, music and puppet performances, sample edible flowers, create neighborhood murals and explore the creative process of in-residence artists during guided museum tours and more!
