3. Thursday, OnQ features-- American Shorts Reading Series

Hey guys, another event I covered for WQED-tv’s OnQ magazine will air this
Thursday, June 5th, at 7:30pm and rerun at 11:30 that night and 12:30 the
next afternoon.

It's the American Shorts reading series (americanshorts.org), put together
by Suzanne Pace. Local Pittsburgh personalities read short works of American
fiction (I looked it up before I went to shoot the show, it means they read
out loud from books).

The event is on the last Thursday of every month at different locations
around the city -- cool locationsŠtheyıve been to the Garfield Artworks on Penn Avenue, too.  This one was at the Brewhouse on the South Side, and the theme is "Art and Invention." Other topics include “War” and will be at the Hunt Amory in Shadyside, and "Sex" at the Mattress Factory garden, etc.  Check out the OnQ show, and go check out the next series (June 26).

The next and last show for the OnQ season will be on the Sprout Fund's first
annual extravaganza, Hot House.  The benefit is on June 7 (See #7 below for more info), The OnQ story will air Thursday, June 12.

Thanks,
Mara

4. Starting Friday Afternoon - PGC meets PPG in a temporary exhibition at PPG Place during the Three Riverıs Arts Festival.

PGC MEETS PPG “Artists of the Pittsburgh Glass Center”
An Exhibition on View June 6-20, 2003 at PPG Place

Pittsburgh, PA: The architectural glass of Phillip Johnson meets the glass art of the Pittsburgh Glass Center in the exhibition, "Artists of the Pittsburgh Glass Center," on view in an empty store front cum temporary exhibition space in PPG Place, June 6-20, 2003 during the Three Rivers Arts Festival.. For more information call 412-365-2145 x 201.

Large-scale colorful vessels and sculptural groupings of glass will be visible through the windows of One PPG Place from the southwest corner of Market Square, downtown Pittsburgh, in an exhibition contrasting Pittsburgh’s industrial legacy in glass, epitomized by PPG Industries itself and the glass cathedral bearing its name, with the recent American studio glass art movement and its local home at the Pittsburgh Glass Center.

Artists represented in the temporary exhibition will include PGC co-founders Kathleen Mulcahy and Ron Desmett, and instructors and students Lindsay O'Leary, Jeffrey Phelps, Nick Russo, Drew Hine, Jacob Stout, Tom Brown, Dave Born and others.   Information about the Pittsburgh Glass Center and its fall roster of workshops, classes and other special programs will be available at the temporary exhibition space at PPG Place.  PGC staff will also demonstrate the art of flameworking at a booth at the Three Rivers Arts Festival on Friday June 13 from 10 am to 4 pm.

Pittsburgh Glass Center is Southwestern Pennsylvania’s first open and comprehensive studio dedicated to teaching, creating and promoting glass art.  PGC’s 16,000+ square foot facility houses state-of-the-art studios in hot glass, flameworking, and cold working in addition to a tech shop, The Hodge Gallery, visiting artist space, and seminar room. PGC’s studios for casting and kiln working are slated for completion in 2003.  The PGC structure has been carefully rehabilitated in accordance with federal -Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, the U. S. Green Building Council’s industry standard for green building design.

PGC is located at 5472 Penn Avenue, two blocks from the intersection with S. Negley Avenue, in Pittsburgh’s East End neighborhood of Friendship.  Free parking is available in the PGC’s adjacent parking lot.  PGC and The Hodge Gallery are open to the public Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm and Saturday and Sunday by appointment only.
