The Steel Valley Arts Council invites you
to
their gallery, art
space 303 to view "USA PATRIOT ART -- Cartooning and Free Speech
in War Time"
In the aftermath of September 11, freedom of speech has been under attack.
Political cartoonists are not immune. In some cities cartoonists have been
fired or lost free-lance jobs because of cartoons critical of U.S. policy or
for using "wrong" metaphors. Even nationally-known artists, such as Boondocks
cartoonists Aaron McGruder and Ted Rall, have been censored or repudiated. In
response, Gary Huck, Mike Kanopacki, Matt Wuerker, and writer Alec Dubro put
together a show of cartoons from 41 editorial cartoonists from the U.S. and
Mexico. USA PATRIOT ART is sponsored by the Battle of Homestead Foundation.
The Steel Valley
Arts Council (SVAC) is a community arts organization represented by a 65
member volunteer organization, and membership continues to grow. SVAC is
dedicated to preservation, community interaction and dialogue, and emerging
artistic thought through rich creative endeavors. Serving the greater Steel
Valley area, comprised of Homestead, West Homestead, and Munhall, the Steel
Valley Arts Council's impact effects the Western Pennsylvania region and host
national exhibits with universal appeal. The gallery, art space 303, is
located in the historic district of Homestead at 303 East Eighth Avenue. The
Steel Valley region once home to the largest steel producing mill in the world
is now an opulent ethnically diverse community peppered with some of the most
talented artists, craftmakers, and creative thinkers today.
