Jazz be Jazz
Jazz be born out of early American music; opera, military marching bands,
folk music, the blues, church music, ragtime and African drumming. A blending of
all these came to be known as Jazz. Jazz be swinging in synch, it be improvising
the sound of light, it be an expression of freedom, whether it be standard,
avant-garde, ballads or be-bop, Jazz Be Jazz.
What is a Mini M?
MINI m’s are miniature music festivals to test the waters and answer the
question, is Pittsburgh ready for an International Music/Performance Festival
along the likes of SXSW, and the Philly Fringe. What makes these festivals
miniature, is that they are only for 2 days, whereas, most Festivals occur over
a period of 1 to 2 weeks. MINI m’s focus on Pittsburgh’s regional talent in a
concentrated manner, Jazz Be Jazz, will feature Pittsburgh’s emerging as well as
some established artists in Jazz and all of its many improvisational wonders.
The
Sprout Fund
A unique forum in Southwestern Pennsylvania embraces innovative ideas important
to young adults and fosters a series of networks that will support
implementation. By seeding many small projects, Sprout celebrates, supports, and
showcases the initiatives of young adults with the collective power to change
our region’s landscape. Sprout raises awareness, creates synergies, effects
change by leveraging the activities and resources of other civic organizations
and individuals working toward similar ends. Sprout leads the region in thinking
strategically about initiatives that will make our communities more compelling
places to live, work, and play.
WDUQ 90.5 FM
News. Jazz. NPR. As Pittsburgh's first public radio station, DUQ 90.5 FM is a
leading radio source for local, national and international news, information and
jazz. DUQ is Pittsburgh's primary source for a wide range of National Public
Radio (NPR) and Public Radio International (PRI) radio programs that educate,
inform and entertain. DUQ broadcasts with a 25,000 watt signal, seven days per
week, 24 hours per day to listeners in Pittsburgh, southwestern Pennsylvania and
parts of Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland. As a nonprofit, public radio station
broadcasting from Duquesne University, over 50% of DUQ's operations and programs
are funded by listener contributions. Additional support is provided by program
underwriters, the Corporation for Public Broadcasing (CPB), Duquesne University
and foundations. The station was founded in 1949 during the early years of FM
radio. DUQ began as a student laboratory on the Duquesne University
campus--exposing students to new technology and giving local audiences access to
cultural programs and information. As each decade passed, DUQ grew in response
to the needs of the Pittsburgh community. Today, with a professional staff and
the resources of technology and mass communications, DUQ maintains its
commitment to news, information and music that you won't find anywhere else on
the radio dial in the tri-state region.
