We are dedicated to bringing out the soul of underground culture in the city of bridges and helping build a community interconnected with the elements beneath the surface. Our goal is to promote collective creativity through a fluid intersection of people, places, ideas and vibrations. In doing so, we seek to connect independent arts and culture to the urban development of Pittsburgh and unlock the potential energy through the poetry of people in motion....

Fri Jun 20th - Ancestral Afro-Jazz with Djema Bosawa and the Afrika Yetu group. Indigenous African's legendary musical sensation, Djema Bosawa, keeps her tradition and folk roots from her homeland in the deep rain Equatorial forest untouchable. Growing up in the middle of the nature symphony in the jungle, inspired by the wild bird voices, giant trees and flowing rivers, Djema has something to sing about. Her career continues to soar, the demands for performances from countries round the world continue to flood in. She has toured intensively all over Africa, Europe and USA and has been always successful leaving the audience in frenzy. Djema and the Pygmy's music invokes the high and low-pitched melodies of African singing and yodeling which influenced many worldwide musicians including John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock and Zap Mama to name the few. According to the artist herself, those ancestral songs are about "unity, education, work, love, and society." But as jazz-based and poly-rhythmic as these songs are, they escaped Western attention for many years, in part because of their foreign-language lyrics, but it is today jazz and hip-pop. $15/$20/$25. 8pm. @ The Kelly-Strayhorn Theater. 5941 Penn Ave [East Liberty]. Tickets: www.proarts.org | Info: www.kelly-strayhorn.org or www.afrikayetu.org
Fri Jun 20th - Film: Power and Terror: Noam Chomsky in Our Times. Without question, MIT professor Noam Chomsky is one of America’s foremost voices of dissent. This timely documentary serves as a fascinating companion piece. Assembled from a series of lectures given at various colleges, then intercut with informal interviews, the film offers compelling insight into how the rest of the world sees us. At a time when unquestioning patriotism is the order of the day, Chomsky’s unblinking views are as unsettling as they are profound. @ The Harris Theater. 809 Liberty Ave [Downtown].
